 Lucinda Keziah Howell (ca.1824-ca.1881)

There was a Lucinda Keziah Howell who was born in Ashe Co., North Carolina, in about 1824, of whom we know very little. She is however of considerable interest to us because of her name, the names of some of her children and her age.

Her name "Lucinda," was not a particularly popular name at that time, especially amongst Howells. However our David Howell family had a daughter Lucinda (b.1805). Just as important, perhaps more so, is the middle name Keziah, a name also not very popular amongst Howells. Keziah was the name of the wife of our David Howell and mother to the Lucinda born 1805. Of course, the combination of those two unusual names could be a coincidence and have nothing to do with our family. Never the less this double name coincidence is unusual enough to be worth the attention of anyone interested in our David Howell family.

This Lucinda Keziah Howells (sometime spelled Howells, sometimes Howell) married a John Stidham, before 1844, and among their seven children are a James William, David Samuel and Clerinda (Clarinda?), three names from our David and Keziah Family, although it should be noted that John Stidham did have brothers named David and William.

Unfortunately very little else is know of this Lucinda Howells/Howell. Almost all of what we do know is gleaned from census records as a series of unfortunate incidences has caused any and apparently all other typical records to be lost. There is no marriage record, no death certificate, etc. We do know that the Stidhams lived first on North Carolina,[1] probably Ashe County and later in Wise, Virginia, where Lucinda probably died.

Tim Phillips (tornadosurvivor08@verizon.net) has done a lot of research on this Stidham famiy and has provided most of the information and data listed above. He was also the one who alerted us about this Lucinda Keziah Howell.

If this Lucinda Keziah Howell is connected with our David Howell family it would either be from Nathan T. Howell (b.1803), second son of our David and Keziah, or perhaps from a close relative of our David. We know nothing of what happened to this Nathan Howell, only his birth date. We can however, account for every other child born to David and Keziah, as well as all their childrin. Nathan would have been 21 years old in 1824, the year that Linda Keziah was born, which would be an acceptible fit. Unfortunately no record can be found of any Nathan Howell/Howells living in North Carolina about that time. There is however a James Howell living in that part of North Carolina and it should be noted that John and Lucinda Stidman's first child was named James.
